SpeakUp Program

Our Program

The goal of the SpeakUp MeetUp program is to create an environment that activates each participant’s potential for English language communication by replacing structural obstacles with a positive learning environment.

The fundamental problem that Korean learners of English face is twofold: First, learners have largely been deprived of the opportunity to use and experiment with the English language in a wide range of social and contextual settings. Second, competition culture has an overbearing emphasis on assessment and comparison that actively discourages experimental use and application, consequently, suppressing opportunities to learn.

Our program is founded on established principles of language acquisition theory and has a flexible structure that enables us to adapt a wide range of curricular content to the needs and interests of the participants.

Session Examples

Our sessions use English to explore an array of important topics. These topics are tailored to the participants and adjustable to your needs. Examples of frequently covered topics include the following.

World Englishes

What is English? How many versions are there? Is there a “right” way of speaking?
It turns out, English is an official language in over 60 countries around the world. Each count has its own ideas of what English should or can be. Some of them have multiple versions of English that are all accepted as standard forms. In this session, you will learn to address the diversity and variability of the English language and the communication challenges that come with it.

Professionalism & Etiquette

What does it mean to be “professional”? Where’s the line between formality and informality? Are there some things that you just shouldn’t do? Or does that change depending on the situation?
Navigating business culture, professionalism, and manners and etiquette in a foreign language can be a challenge. In this session, you will explore the different speech levels, mannerisms, and practices that affect how you present yourself in different situations.

Diversity, Empathy, and Bridging Gaps

What does it mean to be different? Is diversity a strength or a challenge? How should we communicate through our differences?
The English-speaking world plays host to many, many different cultures and ways of thinking. On top of this, there are more second-language speakers of English than there are native speakers. When we communicate in English, we’re really communicating with the whole world. In this session, we will learn how to talk about our differences and use them as a way to connect and collaborate with each other.

Performance & Storytelling

What makes a good story or presentation? How can you get people to really listen to what you have to say?
Whether you’re getting to know new people at a social event or presenting in front of an audience, you will have to use your ability to tell stories and entertain people in order to communicate effectively. In this session, you will learn the building blocks of storytelling and public speaking.
